Family papers, 1764-1830.

Papers consist mainly of receipts and legal documents, but also include a letter, a plat, accounts, and other items pertaining to the personal and business affairs of the Porcher family and the associated Ravenel family. Receipts are mostly those of Philip Porcher, Jr. (1762-1817) for taxes, cotton seed, corn, a gazette subscription, and other goods and services. Legal documents include a conveyance (1830) of Pooshee Plantation (Berkeley County, S.C.) to Henry Ravenel (1790-1867), and a bond (1787) between Henry (1751-1823) and Rene Ravenel and Elizabeth Jane Ravenel. Accounts include a record of payments (1795-1798) to Dr. S. McCormick for medicines and services. Business letter (1786 Nov. 25) from Philip Porcher (1730-1800), St. Stephen's Parish, South Carolina, to the firm of Bird, Savage & Bird, London, concerns the shipping and price of indigo and the shipping of turpentine.

Berkeley County, S.C. physician and plantation owner. He was the son of Rene Ravenel (1762-1822), and grandson of Henry Ravenel (1729-1785). His uncle was Henry Ravenel (1751-1823). Dr. Henry Ravenel (1790-1867) was married three times, and among his children were Henry William Ravenel (1814-1887) and Thomas Porcher Ravenel (1824-1898).
